College Softball News Quick Hits Number 2
by CW Ross
1- The Kentucky Wildcats continue to roll along unbeaten moving to a record of 13-0 with their 10-1 win over New Mexico State on day two of the 2021 Spring Games at Legend's Way Ballfields in Clermont, Florida. With the win, it makes it the best start to a season in Kentucky softball history.
2 -It seems like Duke Softball is for real and deserves their national polls ranking. I've watched them play several games and while they might not be flashy they get the job done on the field.
3- Texas has opened their 2021 at 8-0 for the second straight season and for the eighth time in program history. At the Lone Star State Invitational at Red & Charline McCombs Field this past weekend the Longhorns combined for 26 hits, hit four home runs, and out-scored their opponents, 21-4, in a sweep of UConn (16-2, 5 inn.) and Ole Miss (5-2).
4- Tennessee moves to 12-1 to start their season. Junior Samantha Bender threw the program's 50th no-hitter all-time, and the 46th individual no-hitter in a run-rule 8-0 win over Northern Kentucky in Sunday's second game of the day. It is the first no-hitter since Rogers and Matty Moss combined to no-hit ETSU on April 16, 2019. And the first solo no-hitter since Erin Gabriel's perfect game versus Jacksonville on March 22, 2016.
5- The Florida Gators stay undefeated on the season at 12-0. A lot of that has to do with the quality pitching from Florida's, Katie Chronister (5-0), Natalie Lugo (2-0), and Elizabeth Hightower (5-0, 1 SV). The pitching staff has an SEC-leading 0.71 ERA along with seven shutouts pitched already this season.
